Privacy policy

mWill is a Canadian platform that helps Muslims prepare an Islamic will for their province or territory. In this policy, “mWill”, “we” and “us” mean the operator of the mWill platform.

We are responsible for the personal information we hold about you. Send questions and requests about this policy to privacy@muslim-will.ca.

We collect only what we need to prepare your will and run your account.

• Account data. Your full legal name, email address, province, a hashed password, your language preference, and multi-factor authentication settings if you turn them on.
• Will content. What you enter in the wizard. This includes personal and family details, dates of birth, addresses, assets and debts, funeral wishes, executors, beneficiaries and bequests. We do not ask for your Social Insurance Number. Your will often includes details about other people, such as family members. Please share only what the will needs.
• Documents. The PDF and DOCX files we generate for you, and each finalized version of your will.
• Consent records. Which organization you joined through, if any, and each consent you give or withdraw.
• Technical logs. Sign-in events, security events and an audit log of every access to your will. These logs can include your IP address and browser details.
• Bug reports. If you report a problem, we receive your note, the page address and the wizard step. Bug reports never include your will content.
• Messages. Emails you send us and our replies.

We use your information to:

• prepare your will documents and calculate Faraid shares;
• give you signing instructions for your province;
• run your account, including sign-in, multi-factor authentication and password recovery emails;
• keep your account secure and keep a record of who accessed your will and when;
• share your will with an organization or professional, only when you ask us to;
• answer your questions and fix problems you report; and
• meet our legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use it for advertising.

We handle personal information under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and, for residents of Quebec, the Act respecting the protection of personal information in the private sector as amended by Law 25.

We rely on your consent. Because will content is sensitive, we handle it only with your express consent, and only to prepare your will and run your account. We ask separately for each optional purpose, such as sharing a version with an organization. Optional features stay off until you turn them on.

You can withdraw consent at any time, subject to legal limits. If you withdraw consent that a feature depends on, that feature stops working for you.

• Your organization. If you joined through a mosque or community organization, it sees only that a will exists. It sees the content of a specific version only if you give consent for that version. You can revoke that consent at any time.
• A lawyer or notary you choose. If you request a consultation, the professional sees your will only for the version you consent to share. Professionals are independent of mWill.
• Service providers. We use a hosting provider in Canada to store and run the platform, and an email delivery provider to send account emails such as verification and password reset. They may use your information only to provide their service to us.
• When the law requires it. For example, in response to a valid court order.

Every access to your will by someone other than you is recorded in an audit log. If we ever use a provider that processes personal information outside Canada, we will name it here and assess the transfer first, as Quebec law requires.

We keep your information while your account is open and for as long as we need it for the purposes in this policy or to meet legal obligations. Each finalized version of your will is kept as a fixed record while your account exists.

We are finalizing a detailed retention schedule with privacy counsel before launch. We will publish it in this policy when it is ready.

• Passwords are hashed with Argon2. We never store your password itself.
• You can turn on multi-factor authentication for your account.
• Generated PDF and DOCX files are encrypted in storage and are served only through the signed-in app.
• Access to your will by anyone other than you is recorded in an audit log.
• The platform is hosted in Canada.

Full encryption of will content is being completed before launch, along with an independent security review. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach creates a real risk of serious harm to you, we will notify you and the regulators as the law requires.

You have the right to:

• access the personal information we hold about you;
• correct information that is wrong or incomplete;
• withdraw your consent; and
• ask us to delete your account and your information, subject to legal limits.

In Quebec, you can also ask for your information in a structured, commonly used format.

Self-service export and deletion are being built. Until they are ready, email privacy@muslim-will.ca and we will handle your request. We aim to reply within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in Quebec, the Commission d’accès à l’information.

We use a small number of browser storage items. None are used for advertising or tracking.

• Session cookie. Keeps you signed in. It is essential, and the app does not work without it.
• Language cookie. Remembers the language you chose.
• Local storage. Remembers your answer to the data notice so we do not show it again.

mWill is for adults aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children. Your will may include details about your children, which you provide as the account holder.

We will update this page when our practices change and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect. See also our terms of service.
